5 Beginner Tips for Builders in Meet Your Maker

·

If you’re picking up Meet Your Maker to build for the first time but don’t know where to start, these 5 beginner tips from Lead Game Designer, Pierre Rivest are the perfect way to set yourself up for success (and a lot of kills).

Tip #1: Plan for Punishment

Building an Outpost in Meet Your Maker is all about designing an experience for other players. Whether you’re out to create something tough-as-nails, artistic, or unexpected, having a clear goal goes a long way. You’ll always be able to let inspiration strike on the fly and adapt plans as you build, but it never hurts to have a vision of the rooms and corridors you want to create and how they’ll all play together.

Tip #2: Build One Step at a Time

Those new to the building genre or just starting out in Meet Your Maker may want to simplify with a 3-step approach.

  1. Build the basic structure. The exterior of your Outpost is the first thing a Raider will see, and you can use it to send a message. Nothing says, “NO TRESPASSERS” like an Outpost in the shape of a flaming skull.

  2. Fortify with traps and guards. Look at areas within your Outpost. Envision how a player might move through them. Then experiment with creative combos of traps and guards to lure, trick, and kill Raiders.

  3. Personalize with cosmetics. Put your stamp on your creation with decals, lighting, and animated props to add atmosphere – or distract at a strategic moment.

Tip #3: Save for the Second Wave

Every raid in Meet Your Maker is split into two waves. During the first, the Raider infiltrates your Outpost, fights their way to the Genmat, and steals it. In the second, the Raider tries to escape with their lives. Traps and guards can be set to activate only after the Genmat has been stolen, so rather than using your entire capacity on the first wave, make sure to save some nasty surprises for a Raider’s exit dash.

Tip #4: Think Big

When starting out, the confines of a tight corridor with traps hidden in secret corners is a great way to earn some kills. As you get more comfortable building you can move on to playing with bigger spaces. Builders in Meet Your Maker are like chess players: the best ones think several moves ahead. Open areas with well-placed traps and space for guards to maneuver are great for surprising Raiders and often yield the best results. Ex: Pull the Raider’s focus with a guard in the corner of a room. Once the Raider kills the guard and moves to collect their ammo, a hidden trap triggers to stab them in the back. Now all that’s left is to collect their skull.

Tip #5: Be Your Own Guinea Pig

The best thing to do once you’ve finished your build? Raid it yourself and put it to the test. Run the entire Outpost or start from any specific point to see if key areas challenge you like you expect them to challenge your Raiders. You can fine-tune whatever you need, whenever you need, until you’re happy with the results.

Bonus Co-Op Tip: Divide and Conquer

If you’re teaming up to build with a friend, divvy up the fun in advance and avoid stepping on each other’s toes. You can each be responsible for fully realizing specific areas of your Outpost or assign roles where one person focuses on defenses and the other on personalizing with cosmetics.

We hope you enjoy Meet Your Maker, and we can’t wait to see what you build!
